HELSINKI SYMPOSIUM ON AERIAL ARCHAEOLOGY 2004

Helsinki, Finland

Seminar & Workshop October 4 -9, 2004

Aerial Archaeology = “The use of aerial photography and other forms of airborne remote sensing for the identification, analysis, recording and management of archaeological sites and landscapes.” (by Pete Horne)

The aim of this symposium is to promote the use aerial archaeology in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Aerial archaeology allows the mapping and analysis of whole past and present landscapes and thus increases our understanding of the past by placing individual sites or monuments in context with each other and with the physical and ecological landscape around them. The capacity of aerial archaeology to cover large areas very economically (in time, money and manpower) has made it an essential tool in the exploration, interpretation and conservation of sites and landscapes.

The symposium is financed by the Finnish organizers and AARG (see below).

The symposium consists of two consecutive parts: a seminar and a workshop.

SEMINAR October 4-5

Purpose:

- To discuss the uses, methods and practice of aerial survey, air-photo mapping and site/landscape interpretation in archaeological research and conservation.

- To examine the potential and difficulties of aerial archaeology (whether from new or existing photography) in the various states of the region.

- To promote mutual support by forming a ‘regional network' associated with the Aerial Archaeology Research Group and possibly Ars Baltica.

- To pass resolutions on aerial archaeology in the region and on the need to conserve, make available, and study existing air-photo and related material.

- To provide an opportunity to learn about aerial archaeology and its applications. Students may obtain 1 ECTS credit by participating the seminar and writing a learning diary.

Program:

Detailed program will be confirmed later. Draft program. All the lectures will be held in English and most of them will be given by the members of the Aerial Archaeology Research Group (AARG).

Venue:

The National Museum of Finland (Suomen kansallismuseo), Auditorium, Mannerheimintie 34, Helsinki, Finland.

Registration Fee:

Admission fee has been removed. Please contact hesaa-2004@helsinki.fi for details. Deadline for registration: September 27, 2004.You can registrate by filling the registration form or by sending email to hesaa-2004@helsinki.fi

POST GRADUATE WORKSHOP October 6-9

Purpose:

- To provide for about 20 participants a first introduction to air-photo interpretation and mapping, using desk-top computers and purpose-made computer programs. Participation in the workshop equals 1 ECTS credit. 2 additional ECTS credits will be awarded to students who complete an exercise work conducted after the workshop.

- To do so through 3 days of intensive study, mostly in small groups, using ‘representative' material, which the participants can bring from their own countries.

- To promote internet discussion and support between the participants (and others) in future ventures of aerial survey, mapping and site/landscape interpretation.

Program:

Oct 6: Teaching and discussion for the whole group – photo-reading, photo-geometry and the principles of computer-based mapping from verticals and obliques.

Oct 7 and 8: Intensive work in groups of 2 or 3 per computer, using photos and maps provided by the participants from their own countries. Summing up and commenting on final afternoon. Short talks at the end of Days 1/2 on completed projects elsewhere in Europe. Group discussion of other subjects (such as flying and photography) in ‘break-outs' from computer sessions.

Oct 9: Feedback and planning of the future. Excursion.

Participants: The deadline to apply to the workshop was in April 2004. People have already been chosen to participate the workshop. Due to the nature of the workshop the amount of the participants is limited.

Venue:

University of Helsinki, Aleksandria Learning Centre, Fabianinkatu 28 (entrance through the Fabianinkatu 26 gateway) or Vuorikatu 7. Helsinki, Finland.
