Personnel and related projects

The research group working in this project and in the related TEKES project ``Photorealism in 3-D video digitizing'' consists of the following persons:

In addition to them, we have 7 more researchers working in the field of photogrammetry and remote sensing at our Institute.

The division of labour in our research team is as follows. O. Jokinen, I. Niini, K. Inkilä, and J. Pirhonen work on the geometrical issues, while H. Haggrén, P. Pöntinen, J. Mononen, and S. Mattila concentrate on the radiometrical part. H. Haggrén is the head of the project and O. Jokinen will act as a project manager. He has specialized on mathematics and works currently on the issues concerning the registration of multiple 3-D range views. I. Niini has a thorough knowledge on projective transformations as used in solving the relative orientations of multiple images for orthogonal object reconstruction, while K. Inkilä has a large experience on signal based image matching methods and least squares adjustment. M. Gong comes from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. His primary expertice is for computer science and he currently works for the distributed shared-memory architecture within networks dedicated to photogrammetric image processing. P. Pöntinen has developed the main techniques of 3-D video digitizing and he currently works on the radiometric issues of photorealistic solids. J. Pirhonen has done considerable research on image matching and registration methods. He is in charge of the TargetJR software in the photorealism projects. J. Mononen takes care of the 3-D video digitizing measurements whenever needed. S. Mattila is in charge of the WorldToolKit software. She has recently started her Master's thesis and has already made great progress in developing the manual reconstruction of photorealistic spaces.

In next August, our team will strengthen when Miltiadis Daniil from Aristotle University in Thessalonik will come to visit us for one year (CIMO-funded). His post-graduate research work will deal with photorealistic modeling of urban areas.

This project will belong to our category of basic research. There are currently the following basic research projects underway which directly relate to this project, or for which this project will provide the continuation:

These count totally for about 4 man-years in 1996. The recently finished or still ongoing application oriented projects which relate to this project count totally also for about 4 man-years in 1996. These are cooperated with respective other Finnish research groups and supported by TEKES Technology Development Centre:
